PM Modi Gujarat Visit: ₹35,000 Crore Rail and Road Projects in Vadodara

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is visiting Gujarat on September 8, 2026, with a major focus on railway, highway and infrastructure development. During his Vadodara programme, the Prime Minister is scheduled to inaugurate, dedicate and lay foundation stones for development projects worth more than ₹35,000 crore.
The projects cover railways, highways, urban infrastructure, housing, water supply and renewable energy. A major highlight of the visit is the completion of important sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor (WDFC).
According to the Prime Minister’s Office, PM Modi will also address a public gathering in Vadodara before travelling to Mumbai later in the day for the Global Fintech Fest 2026.
PM Modi Gujarat Visit: What Is Happening in Vadodara?
PM Modi’s Vadodara programme is centred on improving transportation and infrastructure connectivity across Gujarat and neighbouring Madhya Pradesh.
The Prime Minister will dedicate three important sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor to the nation. These sections together cover around 326 route kilometres and have been developed at a cost of more than ₹20,700 crore.
The three sections are:
- Sanand (North)–Makarpura
- New Umbergaon–New Saphale
- New Saphale–Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT)
The completion of these sections is significant for India’s freight transportation network. The dedicated corridor is designed to support faster movement of goods between industrial centres and ports while improving logistics efficiency.
Western Dedicated Freight Corridor to Become Fully Operational
One of the biggest highlights of PM Modi’s Gujarat visit is the completion of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor.
The WDFC is an important railway infrastructure project designed specifically for freight movement. Separating freight operations from regular passenger services can help improve the efficiency and capacity of India’s railway network.
The newly completed sections will strengthen connectivity between industrial regions and the JNPT port.
The improved freight network is expected to support smoother cargo movement, reduce transit delays and strengthen India’s logistics infrastructure.
New Freight Train Services to Be Flagged Off
During the programme, PM Modi will also flag off freight train services from several locations.
These include:
- New Sanand (North)
- New Makarpura
- New Umbergaon
- New JNPT in Mumbai
These services are part of the broader effort to improve freight movement through dedicated railway infrastructure.
A stronger freight network can be particularly important for manufacturing, industrial production and port-linked businesses because faster transportation can improve supply-chain efficiency.
New Railway Connectivity for Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh
Rail connectivity is another major part of the Gujarat visit.
PM Modi will dedicate the Jobat–Tanda Road new railway line to the nation. The railway line has been developed as part of the Chhota Udepur–Dhar railway project.
The new line will connect remote and tribal areas of Alirajpur with the national railway network.
The government says the project is intended to improve connectivity and provide better access to railway services in the region.
A new train service between Vadodara and Tanda Road will also be flagged off. The service is expected to benefit people in Vadodara, Chhota Udepur and Alirajpur districts.
Three Major Railway Projects Worth Over ₹9,700 Crore
Apart from inaugurating completed railway infrastructure, PM Modi will also lay the foundation stones for three railway projects.
Together, these projects span approximately 329 kilometres and involve an investment of more than ₹9,700 crore.
The projects include:
1. Vadodara–Ratlam Third and Fourth Railway Lines
Additional railway lines on the Vadodara–Ratlam route are aimed at increasing railway capacity and easing congestion.
The route is strategically important because it connects Gujarat with Madhya Pradesh and forms part of an important north-south railway network.
2. Miyagam Karjan–Choranda–Malsar Gauge Conversion
The project involves gauge conversion on the railway section connecting these locations.
Improved railway infrastructure can help strengthen passenger and freight connectivity in the region.
3. Vishwamitri–Dabhoi Railway Line Doubling
The Vishwamitri–Dabhoi section will also receive a second railway line.
The doubling project is expected to increase operational capacity and provide greater flexibility for train movement.
Highway Projects Worth Around ₹1,780 Crore
The Gujarat visit is not limited to railway infrastructure.
PM Modi will also lay the foundation stones for three National Highway projects costing around ₹1,780 crore.
These include the six-laning of the Kamrej–Chalthan section of NH-48.
Other works include additional structures and major bridges over the Tapi and Narmada on the Vadodara–Surat section of NH-48.
Grade-separated structures are also planned at Abhava, Mindhola and Khajod junctions on NH-53.
These projects are aimed at improving road connectivity and reducing congestion at important traffic points.
New Flyovers to Improve Road Safety
Two six-lane flyovers at Kandari Chokdi and Luvara Patia will also be inaugurated.
The projects are intended to improve road safety and address accident-prone locations along the Vadodara–Surat section of NH-48.
Better grade separation and flyover infrastructure can help separate local traffic from highway traffic and improve the movement of vehicles.
Gujarat Government Projects Worth Around ₹2,600 Crore
Apart from the central infrastructure projects, several Gujarat government projects worth around ₹2,600 crore are also part of the programme.
These include Phase II of the Vadodara Urban Development Authority Ring Road and a 110 MW floating solar project at Kadana Dam.
The new office building of the Vadodara Municipal Corporation is also among the projects being inaugurated or launched during the programme.
The inclusion of renewable energy and urban development projects gives the visit a broader infrastructure focus beyond roads and railways.
Why These Projects Matter for Gujarat
Gujarat is one of India’s major industrial and manufacturing hubs. Efficient transportation infrastructure plays an important role in connecting factories, markets, ports and cities.
The new railway and highway projects could provide several potential benefits:
- Better passenger connectivity
- Faster freight movement
- Improved links between industrial centres and ports
- Greater railway capacity
- Reduced congestion
- Better road safety
- Improved access to remote areas
- Stronger logistics infrastructure
- Support for regional economic activity
The Western Dedicated Freight Corridor is particularly important because it is designed to improve the movement of freight across major industrial and port-linked regions.
PM Modi’s Gujarat and Maharashtra Visit
PM Modi’s September 8 programme is not limited to Gujarat.
After his Vadodara programme, the Prime Minister is scheduled to travel to Mumbai, where he will inaugurate the Global Fintech Fest 2026 at around 5:45 PM.
The event is focused on emerging developments in financial technology, including areas such as agentic AI, tokenisation and quantum technologies.
Therefore, the day’s schedule combines two major themes: infrastructure development in Gujarat and financial technology in Mumbai.
What This Means for India’s Infrastructure Push
The projects announced during the Gujarat visit represent a broad investment in India’s transportation and infrastructure network.
From dedicated freight railways to national highways, urban development and renewable energy, the projects cover several sectors.
The completion of important WDFC sections is particularly significant because efficient freight transportation is closely connected with manufacturing, exports, imports and logistics.
For passengers, new railway lines and additional railway capacity could improve connectivity between Gujarat and Madhya Pradesh.
For businesses, improved roads and freight infrastructure could support more efficient movement of goods.
The completion of three sections of the Western Dedicated Freight Corridor, new railway projects, highway upgrades, urban infrastructure and renewable energy projects make Vadodara the key focus of the visit.
The projects are aimed at strengthening connectivity, increasing transportation capacity and supporting the movement of people and goods across Gujarat and neighbouring regions.
As these projects progress, their impact on travel, logistics, trade and regional development will be closely watched.
